5 Signs That It’s Time to Replace Your Dental Crown

If you have a tooth that is decayed, broken, or otherwise structurally compromised, dental crowns can be used to build up and protect them for many years into the future. Dental crowns are very durable and can last for upwards of 15 years when cared for properly. However, they don’t last forever, so they will eventually need to be replaced. Here are some signs that could indicate that your dental crown is at the end of its life.

You Have Gum Recession

Bacteria are more likely to accumulate around a tooth with a crown than a tooth without a crown. Because of this, having a dental crown actually increases your risk of developing periodontal disease. You can reduce your risks with excellent oral hygiene and an antibacterial mouthwash can help to reduce your risks, but you should still have it checked regularly by your dentist. You may need a new dental crown.

You Are Feeling Pain & Swelling

If you notice pain, swelling, or inflammation surrounding your dental crown, you should make an appointment to see your dentist. Your crown could either be placed incorrectly, old, or damaged. You might need to have it replaced.

You See Wear & Tear

Dental crowns last a long time, but they aren’t made to last forever. Wearing can occur over time, especially if you have bruxism (teeth grinding) or aren’t following a good oral hygiene routine. You should check with your dentist to discover the cause of wearing to determine whether or not you need a new one.

Your Dental Crown Is Old

If your dental crown doesn’t show signs of physical damage, but you’ve had it for many years, your dentist should still keep an eye on it. Many crowns last longer than ten years, but by monitoring them, it can be replaced if any issues pop up.

You Don’t Like the Way Your Crown Looks

Even if your dental crown is perfectly functionable, if you don’t like the way it looks, it is completely reasonable to want to have it replaced. People who have porcelain fused to metal crowns may notice a dark line along their gumline. If you have cosmetic concerns, this is a valid reason to want your crown replaced.

Dental crowns are great for restoring damaged teeth, but they aren’t completely indestructible. By seeing your dentist and noticing any of the signs listed above, you can get a new crown when you are ready.
